Goals My goal is to minimize MG effects, even if it means not doing certain things where I may overexert myself. My MG is under control and doesn’t bother me that much, and I want it to stay that way. My goal is to be able to make plans and keep them so I can do more of what I love. Accessing health insurance and navigating healthcare while managing myasthenia gravis (MG) may feel overwhelming. Learning how the insurance process works may help you understand what to expect and what questions to ask when exploring treatment options with your doctor. This video features two MG community members sharing their experiences with MG and information about how people living with MG can navigate MG treatment coverage. Like other MG Real Talks Videos such as MG Real Talks on Self Advocacy, this video showcases real people sharing real stories. The discussion format, which is moderated by a member of the argenx global patient advocacy team, allows for brief educational sessions on some key health insurance topics, including:

The basics of private and public health insurance
An overview of Medicaid and Medicare insurance plans
What prior authorization decisions are and how to appeal denial decisions
Where to find support, resources and articles like Health Insurance 101: Navigating Coverage with MG

Tom* admits that navigating health insurance has felt increasingly challenging since he received his MG diagnosis. Even though he is still on the same health insurance plan he had before his diagnosis, he now has more questions about his coverage and costs. Despite these challenges, he has been committed to advocating for himself and asking questions to ensure he is able to access his treatment. He believes that learning more about healthcare coverage is important to alleviating some of the worry while living with MG.

Leah,* a support group leader in the Spanish MG community, explains that she, like the other MG patients in her support group, has experienced roadblocks during the health insurance process. When Leah transitioned from a private to public health insurance plan, she learned that it’s important to do research before choosing a plan. She found a team of healthcare providers that she liked, and then searched for a favorable health plan that included coverage for that group.

Shelley is a member of the Global Patient Advocacy team at argenx. She is passionate about sharing educational information and resources that can help MG patients advocate for themselves throughout their MG treatment journey. Shelley believes that gaining more knowledge about how the insurance process works may help people living with MG take charge of their care and plan discussions with their doctors.
